Gathered in My Name

Again I say to you, if two of you agree on earth about anything they ask, it will be done for them by my Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them.”
--Matthew 18:19-20
Lord, renew our faith in Your steadfast love. Keep us mindful of of the power of praying and sharing our faith with one another.

What are some of your favorite Marian recipes? If Mary was coming to dinner, what would you make?
What do you give a mother who has everything? What will your gift to Mary be this year?

Sanctifying Sunday

In my recent meeting with Andy from our Diocesan Family Life Office, one of the topics he stressed to me was his concern for helping the families of our diocese to live out the precepts of the Third Commandment, reserving Sunday as a day for worship, rest and family time.
Andy’s passion on the topic got me thinking. I came home and queried my friends at Plurk.com with the simple question, “How does your family “Keep holy the Sabbath” by cherishing Sunday as a family?”
The responses I received... READ MORE
What a Boy Does

The other day, while I was putting away laundry, I opened 7-year-old Stephen’s dresser drawer and found a surprise.
All his underwear and t-shirts had been removed. In their place was what you see here: tape, scissors, glue, a batting glove, gum, a torn-off pants pocket, paper, string, precious boxes containing precious secret items, and the “number seven” candle from his recent birthday cake.
“Stephen!” I called down the stairs. “Where are your clothes?”
“Oh! ... Um ... don’t touch anything!”... READ MORE
School Mass

Boy I’ve missed that sound… the sound of 700 plus voices, in sing songy unison, proclaiming
“Good morning, Father Rob!”
to our pastor’s opening welcome at the start of his homilies. At our opening Mass this morning, Father Rob admitted that he’d missed it too - the sound of all of those wonderful young voices, gathered together for the Eucharist.
Father Rob came to us last October, following on the departure of a beloved but nearing retirement age pastor. He’s a breath of fresh air - a familiar... READ MORE

Early this summer, I did the unthinkable—I decided to give up Diet Coke. I know, I know—what was I thinking? It was tough, but I managed and believe it or not, I have now been over three months without a drink.
In the midst of that, a friend suggested I try sparkling mineral water as a substitute. At the time I was still reeling from my decision to just walk away from my dark master, so I didn’t give her product much thought. What in the world can make this better, I wondered and quickly realized... READ MORE
Old-Fashioned Education

Like I mentioned last week, I’m working my way through the Little House books. One thing I’m noticing is this: education sure was different back then.
On the first day that Laura and Carrie go to school in their new town in The Long Winter, the teacher reads the twenty-third psalm to start the day. “Of course Laura knew all the psalms by heart,” the text says, and my eyebrows shot up. Of course she knew all the psalms by heart? At thirteen years of age? Wow!
In the next book, Little Town... READ MORE
Two Arms To Arms

The smallest apostolates can reap a big harvest. That’s the principle behind Project Mustard Seed, a pro-life apostolate begun in 1992 by David and Susan Arms. The idea is beautifully simple. The couple noticed that Life Decisions International published a “boycott list” of companies who contribute to Planned Parenthood. “What if those companies heard from us—a lot of us?” they thought.
Thus began a simple campaign. Each month, the Arms choose one company from the boycott list and invite individuals... READ MORE
