I always have these big ideas of all the fun things we will do. And we do do fun things, but not as much as I’d like or it appears others are doing. Maybe it’s the grass is greener thing. I get so caught up in all the daily things that need to get done around the house that it just seems like there’s not enought time in the day. I know there’s got to be a way to do it b/c I know people do. Do you just get over what doesn’t get done at home and just do the fun things b/c they’re important? It’s a constant battle in my mind…
Are We Having Fun Yet?
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Monday, August 04, 2008 12:00 PM
It’s August and the end of summer is on the horizon. Here, we won’t go “back to school” until the second week of September, but I know many of you start earlier than that.
There’s no time like the present for squeezing a bit more fun from summertime with your family. What have you planned to do this summer but haven’t gotten around to yet? A day trip to the water park? Berry picking? A trip to the ocean or lake? A family hike or camping trip? Setting up a lemonade stand?
I don’t know about you, but I find it easy to get busy and distracted with day to day stuff. I keep thinking “there will be time for that later” but all too often “later” never comes. Then next thing I know the days are getting cool and it’s ... back to school! I think falling back into school routines can feel awfully good in September, but only if I’ve really felt the freedom of summer first.
Juliette has been picking blackberries in our field all morning. An overflowing bowl is waiting patiently in the refrigerator. I think I’ll add some some summertime baking with kids to this afternoon’s plans.
Why don’t you make a summer memory today? Think of something to do today that you won’t be able to do when the weather gets cold and school begins. Come on, now. Don’t let it slip away ... seize the summer!

Does picking, snapping, cleaning and processing green beans count if you do it together?!
Yeah, I didn’t think so....
Yes it does, Theresia! That’s family time, summer style—you’re making memories in your kitchen.
Kelly, you pose a very good question—how do we find that balance between the “fun” and the “must get done”? I think Rachel will be addressing that balance in a follow up to her “do it all” post below. I might just add my 2 cents too. Stay tuned!
I echo your thoughts exactly, Danielle. I’m from Minnesota so when August comes I’m always so sad because I know the end of hot summer days and nights is near. I LOVE the heat!
And yet here I am in front of the computer with a cup of coffee while the bright sunshine is calling me (and my son!) outside. I’ll get there. Just give me two more minutes…
Appreciate the reminder. I had a friend in medical school who was advised to go ahead and schedule social time in her life, rather than assuming she’d need to use every spare second to catch up on sleep. She’d never be caught up on sleep and she still needed social time. I think it’s the same with all the household busy-ness. I don’t think there is an ending point, so I have to go ahead and schedule fun in, because if I wait til I’m caught up on housework it will never happen.
