I am Australian and to be honest we find American slang weird and too invasive due to your TV shows. I am tired of biscuits being overtaken by cookies, takeaway food now been takeout and going to the toilet now going to the bathroom. So it works both ways. I feel for your close neightbours the Canadians much more now.

I have to praise my magazine colleague Tim Drake for his wonderful coverage of World Youth Day in Sydney.(No, that’s not him in the picture --although he did get an interview.) From the silly (Aussie slang and pilgrim snacks) to the sublime, Tim captured the local color and made a far-away event seem more real. As an instance of the sublime, I recommend his astonishing interview with the actors who played Jesus & Mary for the WYD Stations of the Cross. It will become available to everyone some time Friday --only Register subscribers can get it just now. The Stations of the Cross were gorgeously and thoughtfully done (see the evidence at this slideshow the Register put together for us). Once you read the interview, you’ll see that something higher than artistry was at work. Here’s a snippet:
Tim Drake: How did you prepare for the roles?
Marina: I tried to quiet myself and totally leave the secular world. I tried to fast from the things I enjoy — chocolate and meat. I also stopped listening to music and watching television. I prayed to stay focused.
Alfio: Prayer, meditation, reflection. I tried to think of the world and where it’s at today and get a deep understanding of the poverty and suffering that is going on. I tried to feel the pain and use that. I exercised and ran a lot to stay focused. Also, I listened to music, specifically music about the Gospel, Jesus and God to help me reflect and meditate.
Oh --and while you’re at it, here’s a second slideshow: this time, a beautiful and dramatic collection of visual highlights from the Pope’s visit to Sydney. I love the crowd scenes that reveal the energy and fire of all the kids and the last shot with all the hands reaching out to the Pope. Which are your favorites?
