Brain Food

We’ve had more than our fair share of rain here in New Hampshire over the past several days. We Beans have been more fortunate than some, though. Yesterday’s wild storms and floods left many people with damaged homes and personal injuries. We’ve only gotten a thorough soaking.

With weather keeping us all indoors, though, our boys have been going a little stir crazy. A trip to the library where we stocked up on Tin Tin books eased our pain just a little. But the biggest hit during the storms was ... MATH!

Grandpa gave Eamon a copy of Number Enigmas: 100 Challenging Exercises Designed for Maximum Fun and Cognitive Conditioning for his birthday the other day. And thank goodness for that.

While a quick flip through this book tells me it’s one of the last places I would look for entertainment, the boys and their father have spent many happy hours going through this book page by page together. Something about the combination of patterns, numbers, and timed challenges speaks directly to the male mind in a rare and beautiful way, I suppose.

Go figure. Literally.

Those look like fun - for the mathematical mind!  I suspect that I’m not the only lady who loves math and logic puzzles...wink

Yes, of course, Stephanie. I don’t mean to be sexist. I just don’t happen to be one of those number-loving women myself.

Thanks for this suggestion---I’ve got a few mathletes in my house, boys and girls.

I’m always looking for good book recommendations for my family--my “hobby” is filling our home library with nourshing food for our souls.  Any book list recommendations?  I have been following Michael O’Brien’s book list (found at the back of his book A Landscape with Dragons: The Battle for Your Child’s Mind).  I’ve not been disappointed with anything we’ve found so far--in fact, quite delighted.  (I purchase used from Amazon.) With eight children we have many readers in the house.  We watch little to no television (only videos actually) and all the kids who are able to read do so without much suggestion.  (Although it has been more difficult for my 14-year-old son---hard to find approriate yet “interesting” stuff for this gender/age).  And of course, the ‘littles’ who can’t read themselves yet are always ready with book in hand.

Any recommendations woudl be greatly appreciated!
