Clean Slate

This morning, we are off to the grocery store.

I’ve been putting off shopping for as long as possible for a variety of reasons. For one thing, I prefer to go without the big boys, whom I love dearly despite the extra money they cost me when we shop together. As they are at a local basketball camp this week, the timing seems right. I’ve also put off going because I need to make a menu (a challenge for me). Mainly, though, I’ve waited because shopping when the cupboards get totally empty seems so therapeutic, like a sweet catharsis. Out with the old (whithered and expired). In with the new!

I enjoy using up everything we can before going out for more. I don’t always do this, as we can’t go days and days without milk and we’re also (mostly) pro-toothpaste. So it’s not too often that I’m able to enjoy extended periods between grocery trips.

This time, however, things have worked out. My menu is planned, the boys are spoken for, and we are down to almost nothing. Tonight I opened the fridge to find a block of swiss cheese and two shriveled oranges. In the pantry, we have one can of tuna, three cans of artichoke hearts and a bag of beans and rice. The freezer has one block of frozen ground beef, which would be great to grill if we weren’t out of gas. That plus twelve frozen birthday candles rounds things out.

So grocery shopping it is! The best part is that as everything is empty, all the shelves will be nicely wiped down, ready for the new. Get ready larders, here we come.

Hi Rachel,

I can so relate to your article. I wait for the very last minute these days. With being pregnant and having 3 so close in age, shopping feels like such a chore...and the other major factor is the waste of gas everytime I make the small trips to the store.

I dread going with my kids even though my 2 older ones help, they ask for everything in the store. One thing I found easy in my shopping trips is to give them a short list of things each and some coupons on hand and they think it’s a scavenger hunt. It works for very small shops. smile

I also find that shopping at my BJ’s wholesale club for certain bulk stuff helps in my family. They send me store coupons I can double up with manufacturers coupons and I save incredibly, especially on things like toothpaste, which we go out of quicker if I purchase it in the regular supermarket.

Another site I found helpful are the numerous coupon sites like CouponMom.com. This mom and contributor has helped me organize my coupon and organization system tremendously. I am always prepared for big shops where I save between $60 to $80 iwith coupons and sales in every shop, just because I have a prepared list.

Also, some sites have suggested that if you have a large family, you can freeze milk and orange juice as well. I have tried the orange juice but not the milk, because currently I am going through a freezer/fridge crisis with space. lol

Good luck with your meal planning and shopping. God bless you! Jackie
