Five Things

Why wait until Thursday?

In these days leading up to Thanksgivng, do you think about all you have to be grateful for? Or are you thinking more about what you have left to do before your guests arrive?

Some years, I find the gratitude is overwhelming—sometimes I am aware of so many incredible gifts from God in my life.

But some years I have to remind myself, ever so gently, to get in that mindset—to take my focus off of all I need to do, even for a moment, to thank God and praise him for all his goodness.

In honor of that, here are five things I am thankful for today, little things in my life that God didn’t have to send my way, but he did. Thank you Lord for your love for me!

1. Dunkin’ Decaf Coffee
2. Cold weather—a treat for us in the South
3. A cozy baby neck to nuzzle
4. People who sound happy when they answer the phone
5. A sunny spot on a hardwood floor

What about you?

Most nights I try to think of a list of 10 things to thank God for similar to what you listed. Here are five for today:

1. How sweet my sleeping children looked this morning in bed.
2. The price of gas.
3. That the car dealer is going to replace our transmission at no cost to us.
4. Burt’s Bees Lip Balm.
5. That taste of a cold glass of milk after a chocolate cookie.

Rachel! You totally snatched my post! Okay, I’ll get over myself and play along ...

1. that Daniel is still small enough to let me kiss him ... lots
2. that every night before bed Gabby finds a creative way to say “I love you.” Some gems: I love you as hot as summer, I love you a million, million, and then a million more, I love you soft as bunny, and I love you all the way to God
3. the small sweet way that Raphael pats my face as he lies next to me sleeping
4. the rockin’ pair of winter boots my husband bought me ... just because
5. my morning cup(s) of coffee while the house is still quiet

I’ll play too! (And what a nice practice, Carolyn!)

I am thankful:
1. that my dh cleaned up the broken jar of applesauce from the front walk for me;
2. that the kids have the day off tomorrow;
3. for religious liberty and peaceful political transitions;
4. that our two youngest kids still let me give them “muchos smoochos” as we call them.
5. That the dryer is fixed. (Much as I dislike doing laundry, there is something worse: not doing it!)

OK.  A good way to start the day...hmmm.  I’m thankful for…
1. half-caf coffee in a quiet house with an internet that’s working.
2.  for a husband that knows how to and is taking care of fixing two turkeys for tomorrow
3.  heat from the woodburning stove
4.  that I already went grocery shopping
5.  for my part time job that I don’t want to go to this afternoon but that provides enough to almost make ends meet.  wink And for children that can peel potatoes and clean basements and watch the toddler while I’m gone....

I will be thankful.  I will be thankful.  I will not stress.  I will not stress...........

3.That my 2yr old says “Sissy” to make sure his 1yr old sister gets a goodbye kiss from Daddy as he leaves for work.
4.For a husband who appreciates my corniness and sappiness and babies that love to snuggle and kiss.
5.Especially for my son’s birthmom - Praying that she and her familiy have a blessed Thanksgiving too.

I’m thankful that the painters finished up and I have my house back, freshly painted.

I am thankful for my family, especially my husband.

I am thankful that I had 41 years with my father before he suddenly passed away last February.

I am thankful for my wonderful friends and neighbors who’ve shared in our sorrows and joys over the past 14 years here.

I am thankful for the crossing guard, Phil, who crosses my children to saftey each morning.  I’m also thankful to all my “dog walking” friends who stop and chat and let the dogs play together.

My kids and I spent a lot of time this morning making our lists of what we are thankful for and are putting them in a book to take to my in-law’s tomorrow for dinner to show everyone.  I just have to get my husband to do his part too.  They had a great time doing it.

So here are some things that I’m thankful for:
1. A husband who comes home to his family every night.
2. Three healthy, beautiful children.
3. Friends that I can call and complain to.
4. A newfound belief in a God that will forgive my sinful thoughts and actions.
5. An organized home that creates sanity in me.
6. The opportunity to stay home and raise my children.
7. The ability to send my kids to a Catholic school.

OK, those are the main ones.  There are so many things I’m thankful for.  This is my first year as a Catholic that I believe in EVERYTHING that a Catholic stands for and it feels wonderful.  THANKS BE TO GOD!!

5.  Happy, healthy kids
