A while ago I wrote about catechizing toddlers - how to do it, and how much it’s really possible to do it.
I’m happy to report it’s going well around here. Camilla can make the sign of the cross, knows how to dip her hand carefully in the holy water and genuflect when we go up for communion, can identify Jesus on the crucifix, and always insists upon praying before meals.
We still have a long way to go. I’ll be very happy when she finally understands that it’s important to be quiet and reverent during the consecration. But she’s just two, so I figure we have lots of time ahead of us.
On the other hand, sometimes the little two-year-olds are absorbing a lot more than we think they are. This recent episode between my nephew and my daughter is evidence:

I have to tell you, two summers ago our parish hosted its first VBS. The woman who was going to man the pre-K child-care had a family emergency and needed to back out about a month before VBS began. Another parishioner stepped forward. She had just completed training for Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and was surprised that I was familiar with it. She spent the week with our 4 year olds and they LOVED IT!!!!
So much so that my daughter asked for a “church set” for the following Christmas. She brought it into school with her after the holidays to show her classmates (our parish’s preschool) and they were entranced. Now she (my daughter) and one of her best little boy friends love to play Mass together. And the big brothers and sisters love to be their altar servers.

That is absolutely the sweetest thing I have seen all day! Some time ago my daughter used to offer me some “Christ” during pretend play. It cracked me up.

Growing up we had a gold plastic goblet that was red on the inside. We would pull out our children’s bible and play mass too.

my 3 year old has asked when she gets to “have Christ” too and she loves to “peace you” during Mass. her latest game at home is to drape a recieving blanket over her head and “be Mother of God,” as she puts it. too cute!

This is the sweetest thing I’ve seen in a long time. I may have to bookmark it and come back whenever I need a smile!

Adorable! It is amazing how much the little ones absorb. Reminds me of the old saying “Little Pictures have Big Ears!” My kids ( 4 and 2) go to a public daycare which is Christian based. It makes me feel so good when my 2 year old daughter reminds us to say our prayers before we eat! She does this by simply putting her hands together and says “God is Great!”

That is cute! My kids 3 and almost 2 walk around the house holding books over their heads sing Glory to God or Alleluia. The other day I heard my son singing “Have Mercy on us, is a proud sponser of Sid the Science Kid (PBS Cartoon).” It was pretty funny!

oh my goodness this is so cute I think I might just have to lie down. I’ve been catching up on your entries and this just about made my day.
