Palin’s ‘Bad Example’

no good deed goes unpunished

Are Todd & Sarah Palin heroic for welcoming baby Trig into their lives? Some think so, although I suspect any of us would do the same: accept and love our kids as they come to us. I doubt the Palins think heroism was involved.

There’s a third opinion, however, exemplified by this Canadian doctor cited in today’s Los Angeles Times. He thinks Sarah Palin is a bad example because she might encourage other women not to abort their children with Down Syndrome!

Dr. Andre LaLonde, executive vice president of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in Ottawa, is concerned

...that greater public awareness of women making choices like Palin to complete a pregnancy and give birth to their genetically-abnormal baby could be detrimental and confusing to the women and their families.
“The worry is that this will have an implication for abortion issues in Canada.”

We sincerely hope! And for our own country as well.

In the meanwhile, I note how often we hear the complaint that “Religion” impedes the free development of Science. Here we have a scientist crossing over the boundary of science into the realm of making “value judgments,” about which Science is supposed to be neutral. Who’s impinging on whom?

Evil is showing it’s face in undeniable terms surrounding Gov.Palin and the issues her story have brought to the forefront.  I pray that statements like this physician’s will shake people out of their denial about the very real existence of evil and ignite in them a desire to fight it with prayer and action.

marilena:  Where as I agree that babies should NOT be aborted but loved as they are so loving and pure.  However to say that the doctor is going to hell is not your call!!! I know that everyone does not agree with us, but there is a wiser more forgiving being in God.  Please just pray for him that he begins to see the error of his way, not condemn him which is not our call.

We do have a country that is the best in the world and we have a war that thousands of pure people have lost their life so is that better then abortion?  Are all of the people that send our soldiers into the war also going to hell?  I think NOT.

As a Canadian citizen, I thought it important to contact Dr. Andre LaLonde and let him know how disgusted I am with his comments.  His PR team is now trying to prove that his comments were falsified.  I don’t buy it for a minute...however, here is what they wrote back to me:

Hello Lisa,

Dr. Lalonde is currently away on business, so I thought that I would respond in his place, to clear up some confusion about the Society of Obstetrician and Gynaecologists of Canada’s position on prenatal testing and abortion.

Dr. Lalonde and the SOGC support a woman’s right to choose and work very hard on issues such as contraception awareness to help reduce the number of unplanned pregnancies and abortions that take place.

Every day, SOGC members care for women who sometimes have to make very difficult choices and we support women in their decisions. Our goal is to provide individuals with complete, accurate, timely and unbiased information that allows them to make informed decisions. Regardless of their views on abortion, no doctor would suggest that increasing the number of abortions is desirable.  Recent online reporting has falsely labeled both Dr. Lalonde and the SOGC as supporting increased abortions.  Quite the opposite is true, and the SOGC is looking into recourse against the originator of these reports.  This reporting originated through prolife websites who have misconstrued the SOGC’s position.

Like the Canadian Down Syndrome Society, the SOGC believes that women should have access to prenatal testing, should they choose, which can be used to help determine if their child has Down Syndrome.  This testing can provide useful information about the health of a woman’s child, and can influence future decisions important to the health of the child (such as whether a birth should take place at home or in a hospital).  We believe that it is very important that health professionals counsel women in an objective and non-directive manner, and offer referrals to other resources as appropriate.

Mike Haymes,
Media Relations Officer, SOGC

Margaret,
I am not sure what your point is..........I think comparing abortion to the war is just another attempt to cloud the true horror of abortion.  I just read that since the 1st day of the Iraq War 3400 babies were aborted for every 1 war related death.  And that is also only counting the abortions in the USA.  World wide it is much higher.  No comparison.

I suppose we shouldn’t be condemning this man to hell but his intent is evil and there is absolutely nothing wrong with saying that.  We can pray for his conversion but as Catholics we must also condemn his actions as evil.

To your point---I think----Is President Bush evil and did he engage in this war with the evil intent of taking human life??.........I would say no and I could be wrong.  He is guilty of making unwise military commitments but his intent was not just to kill people.  This doctor on the other hand has made it very clear that his intent is to kill all babies that do not meet his standards.  And that Madame is EVIL, no question and no need for examination.  So I guess my point is there is no moral equivalency between the war and abortion. And there is not a good case for accusing the current administration of anything even remotely as evil as this so called scientist or doctor.

Margaret, war is not intrinsically evil, abortion is.  Catholic theology aside, there are two enormous differences in your comparison.  First, sheer numbers:  43 million unborn versus however many thousands of war casualties.  Second, these are innocent unbaptized soul incapable of sin, in your words, entirely pure.  War casualties, while they may lamentably involve innocent civilians, do not constitute the death of “pure” individuals--with the exception of children before the age of reason, of course.  May I ask you a question:  Do you believe anyone goes to hell?

This is a lie. His statements were reported in Canada’s newspaper of record, the Globe and Mail. He was interviewed by a reporter from that paper, Carly Weeks.

No matter what the SOGC position is, Lalonde did say Palin may encourage women to keep a baby who would otherwise abort, and that could decrease abortions. And he did say, “The worry is that this will have an implication for abortion issues in Canada.”

In the websites listed above, I find it amusing that the doctor is in favor of a woman having the right to choose and yet he doesn’t think she has that ability if she is exposed to Sara Palin or the presence of baby Trig.  I’m confused do we ladies have the ability to make our own decisions regardless of what’s around to influence us or not?  He’s pathetic and definitely needs prayer.

Margaret,

I appreciate the first paragraph of your comment.  We can catch more flies with honey than vinegar.  If a passerby comes across this site, struggling with abortion thoughts, strangers damning them to hell is less likely to be positively influential in their decision making than a comment calling for prayer.

With respect to the doctor, what a horrible comment lacking respect for the choices of others.

Did you guys ever hear of “THOU SHALT NOT KILL”???!!!  It doesn’t say that any one life is more valuable or more PURE than any other, regardless of what “Catholic Doctrine” says.  My Bible doesn’t make any differences between life.
