This is breathtaking. Living in Charleston, SC, we witnessed the fire, the mourning, celebration of their lives and Summerville’s winning moment. It’s nice to know that through this tragedy, there are moments of joy.

Apparently, my husband doesn’t think I cry enough.
How else to explain the fact that he suggested I watch this story about Louis Mulkey, the South Carolina basketball coach and firefighter who lost his life in the line of duty a little over a year ago?
The amazing story of his dedication to his team and their subsequent dedication to his memory is truly moving. Grab some Kleenex and see for yourself.

Really great story. I cried, too. But...ugh...I almost hate to say it, but I don’t think Summerville actually won. I even went and found video from another source so I could be sure, and I think the Spartanburg player got the ball off just a split second before the buzzer sounded. (The officials have to go by the buzzer, not the lights or the clock.) However, it was really, really close and they didn’t have the benefit of video replay, so of course the championship for Summersville stands as is.
This brings up a question though—could it still have been the wonderful season in honor of their coach if they were State Champ Runners-Up instead? As a parent of one of the boys who worked so hard to win this for his beloved deceased coach, how would you have counseled him so that he didn’t feel like the team had failed if they hadn’t been named champs?
Oh my goodness!
Thanks for sharing--I’m a sucker for stories like this.
