Maybe you should do the “Great Matching Sock Resolution” for 2009!
The Power of Perseverance

This morning, I celebrated the accomplishment of one of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2008! I’m a big resolver, so back in January I wrote a series of blog posts about my resolutions for the year, including this post about my goals related to learning and professional development.
For the past few years, I’ve been learning to knit. Let me say that I’m not a crafty person, so this has been a big challenge for me. The main reason I knit is that it’s a chance to gather together with friends once a week at our local Catholic coffee shop and share time together. I was perfectly comfortable the last two years knitting simple, rectangular objects like scarves. But my knitting mentor Cindy decided to challenge me this past Christmas by gifting me with sock yarn and double pointed needles. Cindy’s generous gift was her way of gently letting me know that she thought it was high time I begin to challenge myself and learn something new.
I’m a social knitter - the only time I actually knit is on those Wednesday mornings when we gather together for about an hour. So in January, I resolved that I would rise to the occasion of Cindy’s challenge by completing one sock in 2008 (not a pair, just one solitary sock!).
I’ll admit that when I made the resolution, I doubted my ability to accomplish it. My life is sadly full of “UFOs" - Un-Finished Objects. Craft projects that sit in my closet half done. Scrapbooks that stalled in March. Books with bookmarks tucked neatly two thirds of the way into the story...you get the picture.
So today, when I closed the toe on my sock a full three months before my deadline, I felt a real sense of accomplishment! Silly as one sock may seem, there were lots of time when I wanted to quit on this particular goal and move on, the way I have with so many other projects. But I didn’t - with Cindy’s gentle encouragement and helping hand when knitting disasters arose, I now have the ability to keep at least one foot warm this winter!
Accomplishing the “Great Sock Resolution of 2008” has encouraged me to take a look at some of my other New Year’s Resolutions (all conveniently documented on my blog) and see what else I can accomplish before 2008 slips into the history books.
Did you set any resolutions for this year? If so, have you revisited them lately and how are you doing? Do you ever leave projects half finished? Is there a project that you could pick up and complete this week? Or am I the only Mom who’s really great at getting things halfway done?

Lisa, you’ve ‘left me in the dust’ again, with your one-sock accomplishment! My sock needles and a partially done sock are gathering cobwebs some where in the dark corner of a storage closet.
Two socks would be an even bigger accomplishment!
