We too went to morning Mass today. Our (Nigerian) priest told us this story: When Pius X was first named to be a bishop—he loved his mother so much that he went to spend time with her before getting busy in his new position. He was showing his beloved mother his new ring—a ring such as all bishops have to show their seal or coat of arms… his mother admired his new ring and she said, “Look at this, my wedding ring.... it is through this wedding ring that you came to get your ring as a bishop.” Such a beautiful, simple but true statement of God’s plan for man and woman and the fruits of marriage. dt
Time for Renewal

As I sat in morning Mass today listening to our Vicar General give a homily on the first reading and the life of Pope Pius X, I was reminded of the fact that this “Back to School” time of the year really is a moment for renewal. Along with our children, we face new goals, challenges and opportunities.
Pope Pius X was beloved for many reasons and was well known for encouraging frequent reception of the Eucharist. The goal of his pontificate was “to renew all things in Christ”. In today’s first reading from the book of Ezekial, we hear the words:
I will give you a new heart and place a new spirit within you,
taking from your bodies your stony hearts
and giving you natural hearts.
What a wonderful reminder for all of us to embrace the start of a new school year with a “new heart”, renewed in Christ through the gift of the Eucharist.
