We are at the tail end of house hopping while the new oak floor dries up enough for us to move back in. My 4 year old has lugged around a small suitcase with cookie cutters, homemade playdough, an old wallet, and a rolling pin. He hasn’t used it. But it is very important that it come to all the houses we’ve slept at. I love to see them exact the control they can on their world. Can’t help but smile and think to myself “Sweet Little Man.”
To Grandmother’s House We Go
Posted by Danielle Bean in Family on Wednesday, August 20, 2008 3:30 PM
3-year-old Raphael is going to spend two days and one night at his grandmother’s house. The boy is beyond excited about this. In fact, it is all he has been talking about since we made the mistake of telling him it was going to happen almost two weeks ago.
“Is it today?” he asks me every morning. “Is today the day we go to Grandmaman’s house?”
“Not today, sweetie. I will be sure to tell you when it’s time.”
He has been not only anticipating, though. He has been preparing too—packing a bag as only a 3 year old can.
I continually find his backpack on the living room floor and stuffed to overflowing with crayons, matchbox cars, a sippy cup, a small package of crackers, his favorite stuffed cow, and plenty of rope. You never do know when you’re going to need a yard or two of heavy rope.
Or a turkey baster for that matter.
Earlier today, Eamon pulled my turkey baster from Raphael’s bag.
“You probably should leave this at home,” he suggested.
“But I need it!” cried Raphael.
Eamon hid a smile as he returned the baster to a kitchen drawer.
“You know what?” he told his little brother gently. “Grandmaman has one of those at her house. If you need one, you can definitely use hers.”
Raphael looked unconvinced, but he consented. It wasn’t until later, though, that I found my measuring cups, my camera battery charger, an empty can of shaving cream, and a roll of packing tape in his bag.
I think my mother is going to have her hands full.
