Traveling with Tots and Teens

Plan ahead to make traveling with children a more comfortable experience for everyone.

News of this story hit the headlines this week in advance of our family vacation involving airline travel.  The title “Noisy Kids Get Family Kicked Off Flight” grabbed my attention - I’ve had more than my fair share of flights as the mom with the noisy kids!  Blessedly, we’ve never been kicked off a flight, but we have has a few moments where I felt like climbing into the overhead bin for the duration of the flight!  Nowadays, my kids are teenagers, so flying is a breeze by comparison.  But the travel environment these days makes traveling with kids of any age a trying experience, so it’s best to plan ahead to make your trip as comfortable as possible.  Waits will be long, so bring plenty of on board activities - my little ones always loved a fresh container of playdough on long flights.  Also, dress in layers for sporadic temperatures and don’t forget the snacks - you won’t want to shell out $4 for a bag of trail mix or granola bar on the plane!  I’d love to hear some of your tips for surviving long trips, whether by plane or car!

I’m looking for those tips, too, as we have a big trip coming up soon.  Lots of time in the van .... grin

Each year we take an 8 hour long trip in our van to visit relatives up North.  We break up the trip by stopping and letting the kids run around a bit.  We find State Parks, or we stop at Elementary School playgrounds.  Schools out for the summer- so the playgrounds are usually free- and cleaner than the ones at fast food play areas.

I am not above bribing them. Every kid starts out a family road trip with a $10 balance. They get fined for misbehavior (I decide what counts and how much). If they are good, they keep all $10 and have it to spend at our destination. It’s amazing how well this system works—even on my older kids!

I love the bribery idea. I will keep that in mind for when my daughters are older.

And you are right, Lisa. Food is key. At least that’s been my experience. We usually limit sweets, but when we travel, we have plenty of treats.

Food is especially key on planes these days.  We experienced delays both ways and didn’t have time to purchase meals between connections.  If we weren’t prepared it would have been several hours between meals...not to mention the outlandish prices charged in airports for food these days.  Anyone have any good portable food ideas?
