There is a significant difference between having faith and living by faith. Those who have faith trust in God, believing that all eventually will work for the good; those who live by faith, on the other hand, depend upon God for their moment-to-moment existence, knowing that however close to the edge they might get, God will stand with them to save, to comfort, to heal. The transition between those two kinds of faith comes through experience, especially through hardships and difficult times. A sheltered, carefree life makes it easy to assume that God will continue to provide more of the same; only by surviving a few “storms”, however, is it possible to throw oneself upon God’s mercy, crying out, “Lord, save me!”
As Peter walked from the boat towards Jesus, he made the transition between having faith and living by faith. “Having faith” may have been enough while he was safely in the boat; once he began to sink, however, he needed to live by faith...a faith that would allow him to entrust himself to the Lord, no matter how dark the night or how high the waves.

Walking on Water

He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus; but when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me."Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, “O man of little faith, why did you doubt?”
Matthew 14: 29-31
Lord, help us to remember that we can do all things through You.

I love that little word “immediately”. He *immediately* stretched out His hand. As *soon* as we ask for help, we get it.
