“You know the problem with being an author?” Ambrose mused from the backseat of the car yesterday afternoon.
I absolutely do, I wanted to tell him. I know many of the problems with being an author. The pay, the hours, the never having the right idea when you need it but then having exactly the right idea immediately after you hit “send” or in the middle of the night or while you are driving down the highway at 70 miles per hour with nary a pen in sight.
But I thought a 9 year old might have a different perspective, and so I answered only, “What?”
“It’s that I write my stories in notebooks, but then I keep losing them,” he told me. “I usually find them about a year later, but when I re-read them, I think they are so awful and embarrassing that I just throw them away.”
This boy and I have even more in common than I thought.

Well, I think that means he’ll be a good writer. I’ve taught writing for many years & the ones I really worry about are the ones who admire their own writing. I often think lately that “we are worthless servants, having done no more than our duty” is the best we can say for ourselves if we have striven hard for transparency to the Holy Spirit in writing.
I was sent your way by the Curt Jester.

The boy definitely has something there. I can’t stand to read most of my stuff, so I re-write, read, and then the circle continues… Maybe I should just go for it one of these times.
